Lago - Marianas album cover

Before we begin, I must make it known to everyone that this review was originally going to be reviewed by a mister Alex Watt. However, he decided to embark on a surprise trip to the Amazon in search of South American Bigfoot (El Sasquao), and consequently, left this album hanging. So I snatched it up and here we are. If any of you are particularly disappointed in this change, just imagine that Alexwould've given this band a 1/10, thereby making whatever I have to say seem much, much more charitable.

So, let's dive in. LAGO is some sort of Death Metal outfit, by which I mean it's just Death Metal - as we have seen and been to a million times. I haven't heard this band before, but having listened to more Death Metal than I could possibly list, I actually have. By that, I mean it is the most expected, derivative Death Metal one can find. Also, what is this new fad of having some random dickhead making some ominous, vague speech in some sort of echo chamber before the actual song begins? Sound clips are nothing new or fascinating people, stop thinking you are for doing it.

But I am being too harsh. Once you simply accept that this is not going to be anything world-changing and just go with it, it's actually fairly decent. For Death Metal, it is competently written and composed and admirable performed. And considering the pure shit that is Deathcore and all that it touches, maybe it's a good thing to find some good old fashioned Metalheads grunting to something besides a breakdown and pinch harmonics.

I am going to go now; I feel I am needed elsewhere. This is one of those "me, too!" releases. That means that the only people who will like it are people who already like Death Metal, it's not going to win over any new fans or transcend the genre. Too bad. I always like it when musicians evolve beyond established clichés, unless of course it sucks.
