Illusion
Kynesys
I suppose that I can describe the latest work of this young band from Ontario, Canada in a single sentence, yet, I believe that it won't be fair to them if I do that nor for this magazine either, so I won't do such a thing. Furthermore, I reckoned that KYNESYS, with their latest EP "Illusion", put quite an effort for the composition and recording (well produced) of their four tracks. Therefore, I will honour them for that.
If the name of the band didn't ring the bell, that is ok, from what I listened on this EP you will probably hear more of them again but in full length. Essentially, KYNESYS's progressive music is driven from several of intelligent Death Metal groups such as DEATH, DECAPITATED and SADIST. Largely, right from the opening of the first song, I had the feeling that there is something good going on. After I finished listening I was more or less on the same position but not quite the same. KYNESYS are technical, sometimes diverse, in their musical approach and it goes almost towards every aspect of their recording, whether it's the guitars, rhythm section of drums and bass and even the vocals.
Nevertheless, I felt that the release took a path that made it a bit anaemic, even slightly monotonic at times. It started with the vocals that sounded like wicked narrations than actual growl singing. I know some will say that growl patterned singing isn't the real deal like when singing in a clean voice but I urge you to check up on DEATH's and even some of the Swedish old Death Metal so you would see that even growls can be sung in an outline that is more than a flat line. Dan, at the helm of the vocals, has a good voice and killing growl, yet I feel that his singing should be diverse as the music.
After the vocals, there are the guitars. Here the picture looked brighter due to the amazing lead section work of the twin guitarists, Dayle and Kyle. There were also nice lead games on "Becoming The Embodiment" that I really enjoyed listening too. It sounded like an old PC game, but it worked fine for me. However, my plea isn't really to confront the guitars but the riffs written for the tracks. I believe that some of those tracks could have been shortened as several of the riffs were repeating in a way that made them to become as fillers. KYNESYS are better than this.
In the end, I see lots of potential in these guys. Their stuff wasn't boring or filled with sharp edged technicality that caused suffering. "Illusion" is a cool piece and it would be great to listen to more material in the future.
