KUNVUK are a trio of experimental groove metallers from Sydney, Australia who formed in 2002. They have tireless toured to support their first two releases across Australia. In June of 2014, KUNVUK released their third album "Twitcher". The album comes in with six tracks at a listening time of about 30 minutes. Along with their touring came quite a fan base. For a band that doesn't have much in terms of promotion around the world, their sound is strong enough to capture the metal hearts of many.
The album beings with "Into Twitcher" which starts off slow with an almost church ambiance that turns into a kind of psycho scream. To put the sound into a visual comparison, it reminded me of the head that whips back and forth multiple times. That visual stayed pretty much throughout the entirety of the album. "Twitcher" is a fast paced, psychotic, whirlwind of an album that is perfect for those chaotic moments in life where you just need to hear something that feels like your head.
Some of these tracks are intensely creative. "Networking" and "One Vote" stands out the most as they are both disorganized and chaotic, but possesses harmonized and calm elements that bring the album together. There is a variety of musicianship shown throughout each track giving the tracks an interesting platform.
The one thing I find interesting are the guttural, low as low can get vocals scattered throughout this album. These are much more appealing to me, but with the way the music is very artfully written, those vocals are perfect as backup. The screaming mimics are much more fitting. I think the music is forced to the background a bit once the vocals come into play. The guitars are good, as is the bass, but I have never really been a fan of drum programming. However, the digital work on here is outstanding.
The album ends with "Out of Twitcher" which is a phenomenal outro to "Twitcher"; it is the calm after the storm is over; perfectly done.
"Twitcher" is a good album, with great experimental components. I find that while listening, it is too much for my personal taste, but there are many great qualities to the album that cannot be denied.
