Unleashed From Dismal Light
Kult
Drenched in the pit of darkness, aroused by blasphemous sensation and a bitter feeling of coldness charged with smothering one's state of mind into a depthy drift of desperation and dejection, from the edge of darkness and into the gates of oblivion there is an old darkened echo calling. Prolonging what is about to be unveiled just with their name, the occultists of KULT, emerged from Italy, similar to others of their status, envisioned the early 90's inflammation of European Black Metal, gathering old Norse values of DARKTHRONE and GORGOROTH, the Italians refined their second wave irreverence with aspects of early 80's VENOM along with tainted tenebrous of BATHORY and HELLHAMMER. It took them nearly seven years of sin to unleash a follower to their debut album "Winds Of War", yet the broke through the barriers that held them and absolved "Unleashed From Dismal Light", an absolute crudely produced traditional section wave Black Metal gulping a bit of morbidly desponded Doom. However, clinging to tradition might have achieved the old conjecture but unfortunately not the quality.
"Unleashed From Dismal Light" shaped right through me as a common commodity in old school Black Metal, therefore I wasn't surprised when the first cannon ball was fired as KULT began speeding their way into existence on the opening tune, also I wasn't staggered much when I came to perceive the album's raw sound engineering that consisted of often over gain on the snarling vocals, semi garage session that was recorded live on site came to mind. However, KULT's riffs divulged a sort of spike with the well-known Black Metal gristle chainsaw like harmonics while a portion of the songs' arrangements seemed diverse, painting a different picture, yet nothing inadvertently placed. However, as the songs are mainly riff driven, other than Tumulash's morbid chants of filth and D.White and Thorns' rhythm section, especially Thorns' grandiose playing, there was no zest, nothing thrilling. Can't say that there aren't any sorts of reprises, they have those in plenty, like on "Into Deadly Coils", or the sordid passages and verses that led to tediousness because there was a limit to withstand Tumulash's echoing scowls of terror discharging annoying notes like on "Senza Pace".
"Malicious Metamorphosis" and "Exercitus Mortorum" stipulated a decent enough idea of how KULT can live out to their potential, yet I believe that they have to insert additional elements to their material in both to savor the early 90's impressions along with finding the right course to create one hell of diverse Black Metal album.
