Krossfire - Shades of Darkness album cover

Krossfire are a band clearly devoted to their craft. This, the band's second effort, took seven months to make and the attention to detail is evident throughout. Opener "The Ninth" starts things off in grandiose fashion with ethereal keyboards giving way to a hammer blow of a riff. Second song "The Last Ride" shows off the ambition of the band melding together all of their disparate styles. Despite its success, there are occasions where the song would benefit from less operatic and symphonic flourishes. At times extra keyboards and celestial vocals seem crowbarred into the mix. When the epic stylings are toned down, as on album highlight "Fall from Grace", the sheer power of the band is unmistakable. The song manages to cram in more riffs than some bands manage in a lifetime. Additionally, the band illustrates their intensity on breakdowns, such as those on "King Will Come" and "One More Time", recalling the best parts of doom and thrash metal.

"One More Time" is one of the occasions where their ambition takes the song in a genuinely interesting direction. The 80s keyboard line makes it sound like a leftover from the 'drive' soundtrack and it sounds all the better for it. The undoubted centrepiece of the album is the song 'Annabelle'. Here, guitarist Georgi Kushev is really able to demonstrate his abilities; recalling various genres of metal. However, the overly theatrical vocals and the addition of too many musical elements do detract from what should be a power metal epic.

The lyrics on the album can often be heartbreakingly poignant such as on the song 'Farewell'. Dimo Petkov does deal with many of the dark themes that one would expect but manages to avoid too many clichés. However, sometimes the vocals can come across as too one paced, often outstaying their welcome in the mid-range. It leaves him with nowhere to go and when the vocals should soar they sometimes just fall short. Overall, the album has plenty of highlights but can come across as over thought. Krossfire should be applauded for their ambition but sometimes less is more for a reason.
