So, I think we all know the status quo. A band is going to release their first/new record and because of that, they get media attention, specifically, they get interviewed about the album they're going to release. And of course, they aren't going to say "it's complete shit," even if it is, because a) they probably don't think that and b) why would they say that?

That's what's happened with KROSIS guitarist Brandon Scurlark. He described the upcoming release, "Solem Vatem" as having "sludgy disgusting vocals and hard-hitting riffs" while being a "unique listening experience for anyone who comes across it". Was he lying?

Well, I must say, kinda, but kinda not. He was telling the truth about experimenting and making a unique LP, because it does have elements that usually wouldn't fit well into the genres the group is considered to be in, but the whole thing it... I mean like, it's not that they changed a lot about deathcore, it's not that they mixed deathcore with unorthodox elements, it's not that, at all. It's that in each composition, they introduce musical approaches that have nothing to do with deathcore, after, before and in between sections of... Well, "sludgy disgusting vocals and hard-hitting riffs".

The music on this LP has a very polarized feel to it, they don't breed their deathcore sound with different types of music, they just add these sounds in completely different parts and sections. So, yeah, half-truth, half-lie, because they didn't do anything new with deathcore, tech-death, etc. they just added stuff to it. That's cheating, guys. But is it enjoyable? Now that's where things really get subjective. I - a fan of bands that mix genres (e.g KORN, TWENTY ONE PILOTS, THE NUMBER TWELVE LOOKS LIKE YOU) - honestly liked the hot and weird mess the experience of the record was, but I completely understand if the band's "fuck it, do it" musical attitude isn't for you.
