This album has brought about mixed emotions, which I'm sure you'll understand as soon as you've read this review. KRIGSGRAV have produced some quality material in some places, yet also some parts that have left me disappointed as I progressed through the album.
Now I won't lie when I say that this album is dark. Many of the melodic instrumentals (such as in "Ghosts Among the Ashes") left me feeling weightless, as if I were floating in a vacuum without a care. However, this ambience is ruined by a clusterfuck of drums and screams that brings a shock to the system. I'm not saying that these parts are bad, yet the soft momentum that the album has created is instantly shattered, and this occurs far too often. If we're talking about parts of a song separately, then this album is brilliant. They are epic, cleverly composed, and full of hatred and disease, which is the feeling that I get throughout the record. Justin's voice is some cross between a growl and an airy scream that gives off a sense of mystery and dark magic, a nice touch to the album. This is especially effective in some of their dark breakdowns, which are especially heavy. It's almost Beat-Down tempo, with a mystical twist, which will be sure to leave your bones breaking. One thing I was impressed with though was the production of the album. It's not completely clean-cut, which is perfect for this genre of music as it makes the whole record sound eerie and uneasy. I would have to say this is true for their song "Ghosts Among the Ashes", my personal favourite, and if you even consider checking out this album, this is the song I would choose to decided whether or not to listen to this record.
Overall I would say it is worth a listen, but don't have too high expectations of it. For huge fans of Black Metal, you may thoroughly enjoy it, but for people not so acquainted with the genre, this may be the wrong place to start.
