Chicago, Illinois based four-piece Black, Death and Thrash Metal band KOMMANDANT have recently released their third full-length studio album. After 2008's "Stormlegion" and 2012's "The Draconian Archetype" they have released "The Architects of Extermination" in 2015. And they sound like those titles, but that shouldn't be news, for a band that focuses on Black and Death Metal in their newest album.
The opener of this album, "Let Our Vengeance Rise" starts with a dark, ominous intro and gradually becomes more Death Metal like. The song flows right into the title song "The Architects Of Extermination", where the atmosphere becomes more heavy and chaotic, just like the drums, the guitar playing and the singing. With a short intermezzo in the middle part, they make you wait for what is yet to come, and regrettably It's more of the same.
"Oedipism" and "Acquisition Of Power" do exactly that; they bring more of the same. Sure, it's heavy, with growling vocals and fast guitars and drums. And yes, the atmosphere is ominous, sinister and dark. And the music breathes death and chaos and destruction. But what else is new. Nothing really.
Then "Killing Word" comes along, with what sounds a little like African percussion, but quickly changes into regular, fittingly dark drumming. "And Nation Shall Rise Against Nation" brings another song, but that's all you can say for it, nothing new. That also goes for "Rise and Fall Of Empire" and the last song, "Onward To Extinction".
It's a decent, even a good Black and Death Metal album. But nothing new, nothing groundbreaking is going on anywhere in the album. Just for that, you won't regret listening to it, but the album won't really stick with you either. It'll be long forgotten when you hear the next, similar sounding artist doing their own thing in the genre.
