What's that chanting from the back? 'Bring back stadium rock' you say? Well, look no further than German Heavy / Glam Metallers KISSIN' DYNAMITE. Over their 20 year history (if you include their formative years as BLUES KIDS) they've steadily released records, including some albums such as "Money Sex & Power" and "Ecstasy"; well now we are onto album seven, "Not The End Of The Road". A poignant title following the shock announcement last year from founding member and drummer Andy Schnitzer. But I have been looking forward to this release for a long time now and I cannot wait to sit down and listen. The artwork is simple, but striking it'd make a good addition to anyone's library.
Opening is "Not The End Of The Road" with a furious pace, electric atmosphere and as we have all come to expect and love from KISSIN' DYNAMITE one hell of an anthemesque chorus that is just begging to be screamed at the top of one's lungs. If this just the beginning then I am hanging on tenterhooks to see what is to come. "What Goes Up" rolls through with a continued intensity whilst "Only The Dead" keeps the proverbial foot on the gas, driving the record through with purpose. "Good Life" seems to display a more vulnerable side to the record, and the addition of Anna Brunner's powerful vocals took this track to a different plane for me. It was superb.
"Yoko Ono" comes in as a message to the individuals who would try to influence and be 'a part' of a band, solely because they're involved with a band member, and I am sure there are plenty out there. "Good Life" seems to display a more vulnerable side to the record, and the addition of various guest artists' powerful vocals took this track to a different plane for me, for some it might be deemed a bit cheesy, but it felt like a good old fashioned Heavy Metal anthem. It was superb. As "Coming Home" and "Defeat It" the feel good, upbeat vibes continue along just filling my body with light and euphoria. Honestly, I think that it's impossible to feel bad when listening to KISSIN' DYNAMITE, the music just instils this utter joy through to my core and I cannot get enough. The tail end of the release fly's past in a beautiful flurry of intense, and joyful Hard Rock. But the final track, "Scars" really stood out to me; it is such a stripped back and vulnerable track, not like anything I have seen KISSIN' DYNAMITE put out before and shows that there is another dimension to the band. And that is truly wonderful.
Overall, this album is superb. With the difficult and testing last couple of years for KISSIN' DYNAMITE, it is clear to see that Stadium Rock isn't dead. In fact, I would go as far as to say that there has been a definitive and profound maturing amongst the group, and we are seeing an evolution that is hitting all the right note, delivering sublime music and most of all, having the best time whilst they do it.
