Anti-Hero
Kemerov

What is called Death 'n' Roll is just a combination of Death Metal traditional aspects with influences of Hard Rock, Hardcore, Punk Rock and even traditional Heavy Metal. It can be said that ENTOMBED was the pioneer of the genre with "Wolverine Blues" (1993), with bands as GOREFEST (with "Soul Survivor", besides "Erase" was already showing some elements in such way), CARCASS (with "Swansong", but some "Heartwork" already shows some Death 'n' Roll elements), and PUNGENT STENCH. For a puritan Death Metal fan, maybe the genre can sound as a blasphemy, but it is here and revealed many great bands and albums. And the Greek quartet KEMEROV inherit such elements, as shown on "Anti-Hero", their second album.
Rough, brutal and filled with Hard Rock/Rock 'n' Roll groove and many sets of 70's hooks (pay attention to the rhythmic conductions of "Fabricated Gods" and try to stay stopped), this album is abrasive to the bones, keeping the traditional oppressive approach of Death Metal. The band tempers things in a way that works and sounds great to the fans, with very good musical arrangements and with a good technical insight (without overloading things). So be prepared for a massive form of music displayed with energy and many hooks, and try to not bang your heads (if you can). The band produced "Anti-Hero", leaving the mix for Joan and the mastering for Antonis Tzortzis. All their efforts were done to created and abrasive and 'greasy' sonority, but defining all the musical instruments to boost the understanding of what they're expressing. And as they tried to have an organic approach on the tunes, things improved a lot. And the band had Emmanouil Hermano Tselepis playing some additional guitars' parts, and Victor and Zangief on the backing vocals. And the artwork of Nikos Tsikouras (emulating a comic book sleeve) is great!
The album sounds great and musically is good as a whole. But for the lazy fans that need a set of better songs for a first hearing, take a bit of "Fabricated Gods" (a massive weight mixed with frantic and catchy rhythm, showing a good work on bass guitar and on the drums), "Anti-Hero Tights" (pay attention to Hardcore/Punk Rock influences of the guitar riffs, creating very good set of hooks), "Nail" and "Count Me Out" (both songs are showing clear influences from Hard Rock on its harmonies, and what very good work of the vocals), "Hate Speech" (a fast and brutal song, but what abrasive groove touch), "Ungatz" (this song expresses how AC/DC or THIN LIZZY could be if they were Death Metal bands), and the wonderful "Black Right Hands".
