IV - Beyond The Reef of Insanity
Kayser
From the Metal country of Sweden comes KAYSER, a Thrash Metal band formed in 2004. To date the band had previously released three full-length albums. In 2016, they released "IV Beyond The Reef Of Insanity," which contains ten tracks. Judging by the names/nicknames alone it sounds like they like to have fun with their music and their fans, but let's get to the tunes first. "Beyond The Reef Of Sanity" does not waste any time coming at you like a runaway freight train. The pace is fast, the riff is simple, and the vocals are sinister. This is classic Thrash Metal in every sense of the phrase. "Asphalt And Suicide" is more of a mid-tempo song, with a more discernable chorus, while allowing the sound to build a little more. The guitar solo is full of runs and squeals. "I Sold My Soul (For Your Dream)" is a shorter, three-minute song, with a rhythmic swing and an old school riff that registers in the time of BLACK SABBATH.
"Through The Darkness" has a soft opening but quickly turns dark, like an army of killer ants mobilizing for the war path. It's also another song that for me is closer to the Hard Rock genre then the Thrash Metal genre, especially considering the melodic chorus. "One Man Army" however reminds you that this isn't your father's generation of music, and I can see a circle pit forming at the front of their live stage. Then we get to "The Silent Serenade," which is the anomaly at over thirteen minutes in length. The marching sound of the song is doomy and hopeless. It's a decent track with three distinct sort of movements, but seems out of place at that length.
I really like the vibe in the closing track entitled "Dusk." It's thoughtful and well composed, and gives you a sense of a tale being told in the music, akin to the dying days of a once proud empire and the subsequent rise of another. I think the album has potential, but never having heard their earlier work it's tough to comment on any development that has occurred along the way. It does however sound like they have committed themselves to a defined style which you can readily access as a thread throughout the tracks. For me it's bit to unilateral however with the exception of a few songs. But on the other hand, if you like your music to be more accessible, I do believe you will like this album.
