KANTICA is an Italian Symphonic Metal band, raised from the ashes of the previous band KEEPER OF TIME. The project was born around 2014, from the idea of Matteo'Vevo' Venzano, who searched for musicians to play start a band which could bind Heavy/Power Metal sounds to the orchestral parts of the classical music. The solidified line-up in the band now presents their debut full-length, titled "Reborn in Aesthetics," which contains eleven tracks.

Symphonic Metal in Italy has really been something I have heard a good deal of lately. But let's get to some of the highlights on the album to see what KANTICA has to offer. The opening track is a quick mood-setting instrumental which segues into "Albatross." The opening guitar riff chimes with bells and moves forward quickly and with testament. Chaira's vocals are done singularly and with harmony, and the guitars create a Power Metal sound. Some of the Symphonic elements come to the forefront at the bridge that follows the second chorus. The piano and violin are especially touching. "Fascination of the Elements" opens with the dexterous and thunderous drumming of Titti Cotella. Through more ambient passages and doses of melody, it has a charming sound that can be a bit dark at times.

"From Decay to Ascension" opens with some thick and hardy bass lines that I would have liked to have heard a bit more of. The shorter three-minute song features recorder, piano and keys, and some nifty lead guitar breaks. "Illegitimate Son" is a mid-tempo piece that is driven by piano, vocals and an easy listening guitar riff. Through some meter and riff changes, they keep the song fresh and accessible. "Lovecide" opens with lead guitar carrying the melody, and reminds me of something you might hear from guitar legend Adrian Smith. Indeed, the influences of IRON MAIDEN continue to inspire man bands in many sub-genres today. Smart use of harmonies and supportive elements make for a memorable listen. "Psychological Vampire" has some nice shifting to keep you on your toes, and a tough, aggressive sound in the riffing. When Chiara's vocals get into the upper ranges, here vibrato is fierce. There is a good balance here between melody and menace.

This is a good debut album in the Symphonic Metal genre. The band has talent, and easily connects melodies while offering a diverse sound from other various instruments that are good at supporting the main sound but not overwhelming it. They have a good foundation here to build on. What I think could really push them over the top of other bands in this style is some more dynamism in the music...stronger accents both vocally and in the music so that it comes more to life. Still, it was an enjoyable listening experience and fans of this genre will surely find it to their liking.
