Paranoia Pilgrimage
Kant
“Paranoia Pilgrimage” is the second album by heavy psychedelic rock band Kant from Aschaffenburg, Germany. The sound has taken on a darker, heavier and more sinister tone compared to their debut release "When The Strangers Come To Town" . Recorded live in a small studio in the woods of Germany's Black Forest, Kant remain true to their 70's inspired approach to music making. Drawing inspiration from bands such as Black Sabbath, Witchcraft, and Horisont, the album transports the listener into a mystical realm teeming with occultism, prophecy, and mystical beings.
“Paranoia Pilgrimage” was recorded live in the studio to catch that raw edge feel, which of course you can tell it has an authenticity about it, no modern bells and whistles production and touches here & there to make it more polished, which is great or is it? “Great Serpent” is mellow from the start with some more heavier breaks, its trippy capturing that 70's psychedelic sound. ”Baba Yaga “ reminds me a bit of the late 60's,early 70's flower power era some nice guitar riffs. To be honest I'm loosing interest, this is not my cup of tea at all “Book Of Creation” the vocals seem lost behind the melody of the music, guitar wise sounds good, but at the moment all the tracks sound very similar. ”Occult Worship” sounds Sabbath influenced more fast paced ,heavier melody with a nice guitar solo which is a bit of an improvement on the former tracks. ”Paranoia Pilgrimage” is also a heavier track with again mellow parts which has a dark eerie feel to it , deep bassline giving the track depth but still not great for me. ”Dark Procession” now this is more like it for me a faster tempo ,catchy melody ,not as trippy or psychedelic 70's style heavy metal ,much the same can be said about “Lord Of The Flies” vocal. improvement ,meaty guitar riffs, with a galloping tempo, ”Rainbird” the last track on the album over 8.5 minutes long has mellow and heavy breaks ,but I find the track to drag, for me ,does not flow at all.
In conclusion, I found this record to be unappealing to me, apart from a couple of tracks which were OK. Its too trippy and psychedelic for me struggling also to hear vocals in some tracks. I like the big anthemic choruses ,melodic melodies something with a bit more kick in it which “Paranoia Pilgrimage” is not unfortunately ,granted it was a listening experience, other people may enjoy it more than I did. But its a listening experience I will not be repeating in a hurry.
