Kampfar - Til Klovers Takt album cover

From their EPK, "Til Klovers Takt" is an album that stands on the shoulders of everything that came before it in KAMPFAR's catalogue. It draws inspiration from the first song written 28 years ago as much as it leans on any other period in the band's past. The surroundings of Hemsedal and Hallingdal with their rich history and awe inspiring nature forms the background for the stories told within the six chapters as well as influencing the tonal and rhythmical approach to the songs. The result is a finely tuned album where each piece has its own voice and its own atmosphere, where nothing is accidental and where the band, having taken control of all aspects of the recording process, were able to create exactly the album they set out to release." The album has six songs.

"Lausdans Under Stjernene" is the first. Smooth tones open the song, leading to a sound reminiscent of DIMMU BORGIR or even BEHEMOTH. I suppose since they existed around the same time, this sound was something to explore then. It has a slow grind from there, and there is a drop in sound for a few bars with trumpet notes, but the madness returns through the end. "Urkraft" features another slow grind with hints of depression and even some audible bass, which often gets lost in the mix in this genre. The vocals come around in chants as the song builds to an early crescendo, and then undergoes some meter changes. The shifts are handled expertly by the band, and the sound culminates in a killing spree the likes of which have never been seen before.

"Fandens Trall" is a bit more succinct. The amount of power the band milks from singular notes is incredible. This music is commanding. The longer it lingers the more energy it gains. "Flammen Fra Nord" is another might song with plenty of backing elements. The band fills any loose space tightly with bricks that conform to the holes with an air tight seal. The slow down come to a near halt with torturous sounds but still stays as thick as smoke. "Rekviem" is a lengthy offering with no less potency. It peels your skin slowly until nothing is left but bone. Or, it could be a slow acting poison that eats you from the inside out. Whatever torture you prefer, KAMPFAR is here to deliver it.

"Dødens Aperitiff" closes the album, with authority. If the depressive tones don't get you, the angry ones will. The balance of these two features on the album is key. Filthy symphonic elements are also added to the broth, creating a stew that is as rich as it is flavorful. I found this album to be exactly as advertised. Nearly 30 years of rich history and they have honed their sound to a cohesive whole. For KAMPFAR, it's all about charge, command, and direction, and the balance they display is outstanding. Forget about your dad's Black Metal, this one stays true to the roots of the genre while adding some unique twists along the way.
