Dominus Meus

Kalmo

I found the album to be a spiraling trip to the dark corners of your mind, where cobwebs grow, and areas that you haven’t visited in some time but keep locked away. In these dark corners, you can hear footsteps approaching, but they never reach their destination. The album has potential, if the artist can season the songs with a little more flavor.

From their EPK, “Hailing from the haunting landscapes of Finland, “KALMO, the enigmatic force of Blackened Doom Metal, is set to unleash their third opus, "Dominus Meus" EP. Embrace the abyss as their tormented soul weaves nightmarish tales of darkness and despair. The EP unveils three new songs in a nightmarish cycle swirling deeper into the abyss of development, as their style and sound brood and fester, birthing a new sinister layer of malevolence. The haunting melodies of the EP lay an enigmatic course into the depths of darkness, unfurling veils of shadows and obscure secrets.” The EP has three songs.

“Touching the Sun” is first. The mood is dark and disturbing, with a weighted dissonance in the riff and deadly, raspy vocals. Talk about a hopeless sound…this song is void of emotion, void of pain, and void of life. The only thing keeping it alive is a tinge of desperation. “Be Wary of the Death” is barely three minutes in length. Again, a doomy sound combined with Black Metal vocals carries the song, and the short guitar solo sounds like a desperate plea for help. The title track closes the album, and the low end is so cavernous, the strings on the guitar and bass reverberate for what seems like days.

Three songs is barely enough to form an opinion on the album, but as a reviewer, it is my job to do so. I like what I hear on the album, although there were not many melodies. Instead, I found the album to be a spiraling trip to the dark corners of your mind, where cobwebs grow, and areas that you haven’t visited in some time but keep locked away. In these dark corners, you can hear footsteps approaching, but they never reach their destination. The album has potential, if the artist can season the songs with a little more flavor.
