Kalle Wallner - Voices album cover

Kalle Wallner is a guitarist and founding member of the bands RPWL and BLIND EGO, producer and co-owner of the music label Gentle Art of Music and the Farm Studios. On February 25, 2022, Kalle Wallner will release his first solo album under his own name. "Voices" contains six instrumental songs and one song sung by Arno Menses (SUBSIGNAL). Special guest on drums is Marco Minnemann. The album contains seven tracks.

"One" opens the album, with melodic keys, leading to a fairly flat and trite riff. The dichotomy between the two instruments is vast. The keyboards and lead guitars are excellent, but he needs to beef up that riff. Leaving the riff aside, the song begins to reach out and explore, and the Progressive elements are strong. "Two" features some more Progressive elements and a more sophisticated sound. The guitar work is inventive here. Just before the half-way mark, some really nice and emotional tones ride in on a breeze. The same goes for the leads here...they are gorgeous. As the song starts to come together united under one main melody, it really shines.

"Three" features Arno Menses on vocals. It's one of the more succinct and straightforward songs on the album. Arno's smooth and poignant voice serves the song very well. The chorus is emotional and free flowing with just a tinge of the melancholy. "Four" begins with a darker and harder riff, with some commanding Progressive elements. The leads that join in are again very well-done. Rounding the half-way mark, ambient and dreamy tones play along. A guitar solo comes in and rights the ship. "Five" is a shorter song with a more straightforward timeline. I really enjoy the bouncy and more playful rhythms here, and the bass work is memorable as well. The melodies built are bright and shiny.

"Six" features Tanyc on vocals. It begins with jovial keys leading to a rousing guitar riff, and the album is improving as it moves along. The melodies here are more tangible and up for grabs. The dreamy atmosphere is augmented with sprinkles of lead guitar melodies, done with a ton of blues influence. "Seven" closes the album. It's an 11-minute opus, beginning with keys in steady tones. Some chunky bass guitar notes join in with the leads, and the ambiance and layering are beautiful. The sonority increases and decreases throughout, but the drop and change around the 2/3 mark shows a prowess in songwriting. There is a fade-out at the end.

The pedigree of Kalle Waller is no joke in the Progressive Metal world. His first solo outing however was a bit on the inconsistent side. There are moments of brilliance, but the album as a whole is more exploratory and opaque than solid and earthy. This can often be the case in this genre of music. The album is good, but I feel with some improvements his next outing will be even better.
