"Superstition"is the debut album from KAKTUS PROJECT, a one man band. So it seems strange to me that Sylvain Rouvière would choose to have guest musicians (from bands such as KAMELOT and METALIUM) without first establishing himself as an artist in his own right.

Now don't get me wrong, Rouvière is a very good guitarist, and his vocals are not too bad. "Supersition" is a pretty decent record, with a few great moments. For example, the title track has got an awesome chorus in it, and "Above The Flame" has got some brilliant riffs that you can really get your teeth into. Furthermore, it's definitely a promising release, as I started listening to it; the first three or four tracks gave me high hopes for the rest of it. But the problem is that it never really took off, in my opinion. As a whole, I don't think I could use any superlatives to describe the album. I could use words like excellent and brilliant for individual moments, but presented to me all together, I think the highest praise I could give it is 'good'.

The down points of this album come with the slower tracks "Tonight" and "My Tears". They don't really fit with the rest of the album, which is really unfortunate because the vocalist, Amanda Somerville, has an awesome voice; it's just not used very well. Another strange choice is the song that has been covered. Now, Freddie Mercury's voice is very hard to emulate at the best of times, and as such I am wary of QUEEN covers. But this version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" is awful. It might seem harsh for me to say that, but there's really not any other word for it. It certainly doesn't help that the vocals are heavily accented, and this makes the song sound really, for want of a better word, weird. The album would certainly have gained something from not having this as a bonus track.

"Superstition"is full of great guitar solos, catchy riffs, and some stunning vocals. But as an entire package, it just doesn't work all that well. I can't help but think that Rouvière may have tried to be too ambitious with this release, and unfortunately fell short.
