Kaipa - Angling Feelings album cover

In May 2007 KAIPA released their 9th and brand new studio album entitled Angling Feelings through the Inside Out Music label. This release is the successor to Mindrevolutions that saw the light of the day in 2005.
KAIPA was formed in the 70s and released five albums during the years 1975 - 1982. In 1982 the band recorded by themselves the album Nattdjurstid that was released through Piglet Records. Although it was a good album the band members decided to have a break since it was really difficult to make a living out of it. Eventually, this break lasted 20 years. After this break and some hours over the phone talking about a reunion Hans Lundin and Roine Stolt got together and made Keyholder (2003) and Mindrevolutions (2005).
Angling Feelings is the latest addition to the band's back catalogue that comes without the second founding member and guitarist Roine Stolt in the lineup. So, let's see how this departure affected KAIPA's sound.
For the very beginning KAIPA's music was (and still is) based on keyboards and especially on the vintage sound of the Hammond organ, the Wurlitzer electric piano and the Davoli synthesizer. Without Stolt's lead guitar the keyboards have a wider role by taking over most of the lead parts. However, Lundin gave some space to  Per Nilsson (SCAR SYMMETRY) who did well in songs like Angling Feelings, Liquid Holes In The Sky or The Ship Of Life. The album sound like the late works of Arjen Lucassen with AYREON where some non-metal instruments appear (flutes, whistles) that add some vivid folklore elements. The music is completely unpredictable (this is exactly what Progressive means) bearing a 70s atmosphere with strong influences from Pink Floyd.  The vocal performances from Patrik Lundstrom and Aleena Gibson add greatly on the theatrical side of the album by performing different roles on every track. The sound production is excellent and delivers flawlessly the old time atmosphere of this long and colourful musical trip upon the ship of KAIPA.
In order to avoid possible misunderstandings I have to make it clear that this is not a Heavy Metal album; it surely contains some Hard Rock elements when it comes to the guitars but that's all. You have to be already a KAIPA fan or open minded in that degree that you are not considering the AYREON albums boring or too complicated to follow. Personally, I joined listening to this album with the ugly cover art (like a XBOX game) that change my initial thoughts about KAIPA.
