Grim I & II

German Black Metal scene has habituated me to depressive style of this genre. It's a bit too much to describe KADAVRIK as Black Metal. More like Death Metal with some extra touches. I think I can say in that in some parts their style is Blackened. It turned out that genres are mixed in such weird proportions, that It's hard to describe in one term. Of course it's "Grimm", after all. Just like the title for the albums says. Lyrics are based on Grimm's fairy-tales. Quite surprised that they released it on 26th of June instead of Halloween.
"Grimm I & II" as you would expect is made of 2 pieces. First is called "The Armless Maiden", which is supposed to be about a lesser-known fairy-tale, and second is "Thoughts of the Sore", which is a shred of romantic allusions. Both are kept in dark convention. Listening to the intro of "Wither Away" clearly says that there will be no happiness nor major chords. Intro to the song suggests that album is gonna be really pumping, but instead of it turned to be more atmospheric. And here is a nod to the mix and mastering. Someone did really nice job here, especially when we consider the details. The band makes a lot of breaks, which has more of this atmosphere function which I mentioned before. Between slow and melodic breaks and slowdowns, there are mainly double-bass and tremolo Black Metal parts, even strengthened by vocalists modulation from growl to scream. To be honest, the first part felt more romantic, if this is what band tried to achieve in album. Songs from "The Thought Of The Sore" are more raw than for example be from the first part I would point this track. "Wither Away", together along with "Lords" as the best ones. Band provides many interesting themes, but seems to follow one schema of; lets make some blasts, then put something climatic, then double bass etc. There's no much variety in form and composition.
It's still a pretty good album. Sound and the tune might be absorbing, but If you simply won't get into it, you can simply get bored. I mentioned at the beginning that It's hard to categorize. In this case this mixture is a reason for strife style and composing. Some might like it, some not. Still interesting and quaint.
