I admit I am not a very big fan of fusion/jazz rock but I must say that is one of the most beautiful and interesting kinds of music and how can one not admit it when you have a group like Jing Chi with members who have, each of them, a big history in music!!!
Of course I'm talking about Vinnie Colauita (Sting, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan), Jimmy Haslip (Yellow Jacket, Tommy Bolin, Steely Dan),and Robben Ford!!!
3D is the title of Jing Chi's new album! 8 instrumental songs between fusion/jazzrock and one with the participation of Robert Cray (vocals and guitar) on It's Nobody's Fault But Mine which is a very big (14 min. 39 sec) version of Blind Willie Johnson's song!!! 11 tracks between fusion and jazzrock with a lot of blues elements and programming of course done by Vinnie Colaiuta! Also, 3D has been produced by Jimmy Haslip!
The album has a lot of programmed atmospheric passings which give you the impression that 3D is a continuous album. The thing that makes the album good is the great technique and talent, which the members of the band have plenty of it, without wasting any of their energy in aimless and useless movements. In this album there's also a big number of musicians who help the band make the tracks more beautiful with music instruments like the organ and the soprano sax.
A very good album from an excellent group of musicians!! What else can we say?
8 / 10
