This is the fourth studio album from J D Miller. With guitar player Tommy Tiomnen (Ex State Of Drama) back in the line up and Jonny Trobro (Hydra, Find Me and Ex First Signal) brought in as the new bassist, the four piece from Boras Sweden bring us a heavier sound scope. Their sound is described as the “Heaviest AOR Around” drawing their influences from Hard Rock. Metal and AOR. The songs and album focus on “The story of the complex minds of people to be at the wrong side of the law in the universe” the band states. Mixed and mastered Mikael Andersson at MRG Production /Studio Soundport Sweden to give the album that extra punchy in sound which the melodies require,

Up until now I had never heard any material by J D Miller so I did not know what to expect “Empryean” opens with an instrumental interlude a cool piano introduction which then builds momentum with some nice synth touches and then intertwines into the next track “Butterfly” which is is a mixture of heavy riffs and drums but also has melodic parts to the track which blend together to create a great track. ”Inside The Night” has a very catchy melody with that modern hard rock sound, which also complement Paul Halldens vocals very well. ”Out Of Control” just keeps that cool sound the band have made. The synth touches are prominent, very slick, the heavy melodies which blend with that Melodic/AOR sound. ”Never Give Up” is delivered with that synth wave influence also coming through in the mix ,its catchy chorus stick in your head. ”Awake (We Are The Machines)” is a more heavier track maybe the heaviest on the album but still has that melodic tempo mid track which again blends superbly. ”One In A Million” is a very unique track its very clever how there are four different genres mixed together in the melody its Heavy, Melodic, Synth Wave and also AOR its the highlight of the album for me its just pure genius which cannot be defined. “Call The Police” is another great track more a modern melodic rock track the keyboard work on this track in fact the whole album by Emil Eriksson is superb ,nice guitar touches. ”Enemy” has that track has that sing along chorus and Scandinavian melodic rock structure, very much an Eclipse sort of sound. ”Alive” closes the album an epic track at nearly 8 minutes long almost a Prog Rock/Power metal sound in fact a lot of genres Jonny Trobro has some great bass grooves in this track, which also has some excellent drum work from Emil Eriksson, A very much experimental track which sounds great to end this album perfectly.

“Empyrean” is an album which has no specific genre but it is the “Heaviest AOR Around” as quoted by the band. It has been cleverly put together has changes of styles, the songs are great ,have the perfect blend and structure. It has some very clever ideas, its different and unique ,its modern and a breath of fresh air. It's an album for fans of Metal, Melodic and AOR with a bit of Synth Wave thrown in for good measure. On paper it sounds like it won't work but it delivers a great album for the modern era.
