Congress Of The Insane
Izegrim
Sometimes it is hard to identify the inner weasel, the internal evil lurking within waiting for the right moment to show its hideous face, prepared to commit heinous acts just for the thrill of it or satisfy its hunger. The phrase "Simple People" isn't that simple at all, as it doesn't exist. Within every person there is that dark side, some let it out usually thus being evil and others supress it. Looks can be deceiving, and if you won't be careful the truth's ugly head can always rise and devilishly laugh right back at you like a smirking clown. That is virtually the doctrine that led the Dutch Death / Thrash Metal bone crushers, IZEGRIM, for the composition of their brand new release, "Congress Of The Insane", via Listenable Records. Other than a few political driven statements, IZEGRIM possess various notions regarding our crumbling worldwide society slowly disintegrating values, showing the true face of humanity. Taking what appears to be influential voice proclamations from older gods like SLAYER, HOLY MOSES, early 90s SEPULTURA, TORTURE SQUAD, THE CROWN, GOREFEST and later GOD DETHRONED, the musical conduct of IZEGRIM has its elemental multitudes that has been quite communal within this fusion of Death and Thrash Metal, but still their spike is reasonably palpable and cataclysmic. Long live the freaks of chaos.
In contrast to several other modern intensive Death / Thrash, or the other way around, acts, IZEGRIM seemed to appreciate and comprehend the importance of a melodic edge within their music. Founder and long-time guitarist, Jeroen Van Heuvelen, along with his second axe, Bart Van Ginkel divulged astounding resonant licks adding that Swedish DECADANCE and ARCH ENEMY atmosphere to the songs. Furthermore, these two axmen also contributed and exchanged spectacular lead guitar soloing efforts of true shred nature collaborating with a few classic Metal hints. On the other hand, IZEGRIM's melodic sense has its limits while their tunes are riff based and in a sort of way that limit was their so called Achilles heel. Nonetheless, what impressed me was the fact that at least their songwriting is quite good including several interesting main riffs defining the crossbreed of the genres sounding like the potency of LEGION OF THE DAMNED and CRIPPER but with melodies, exemplary drumming and bass demonstrations and blackened deathly blooded saw vocals out of the maw of Marloes Voskuil, which isn't that far from Sabina Classen, Angela Gossow and Kitty Saric, both in quality and vocal pattern resemblance.
IZEGRIM have their grey areas, their fillers and might have a shared common ground with nowadays acts, yet I believe that "Congress Of The Insane" should be rendered as a disposition of their skills and qualities. The exceedingly challenging songs "Carnival of Deception", "Endless Strife" and "Relic of the Past" attested a little techy stretch with the constitution of amazing fretworks, punishing brutal rhythms and commanding high end growl vocals with a plethora of power and conviction to carry this torch forward with might. Also, there is a measure of catchiness to the tracks, plenty of segments to headbang your face off as your adrenaline rises. As I proclaimed earlier, IZEGRIM are not so different than what is going on within the veils of this fusion they have been playing, yet they have that melodic edge that if enhanced, they could be something brilliantly addictive. Beware of weasels...
