French power trio IRON LIZARDS have unleashed their debut album, "Hungry For Action," on the world. Issued via The Sign Records on September 17, 2021, this is 12 tracks of grit and fury. A celebration of the meeting of punk and metal in someone's garage, IRON LIZARDS bring a lot to the table. The intensity is here and the no one will escape without damage, likely self-inflicted as you jump around and slam into everything while listening.
The record launches with a few quick hits to the high hat before the guitar kicks you in the face. Full of attitude, "It's About Time!" is frenetic and furious. This pace will not let up for the rest of the disc. "The Way You Play the Game" is just as fast and just as fun. The quick solos, the little tunes and fills that are layered over the riff are good to hear. If they pick up a second guitarist at any point, their parts are already there. There is enough sound for more instruments.
Though they've been present before, we have to now shift away from the guitar and discuss the bass and drums. Rhythm section on speed is the most appropriate description. They power the songs along, driving the tempo like they stole it. "Rip It Up" flails along, slam dancing through your ears like a tune that is going to drive you over the edge. "No Escape" does much the same. Both are fast and full of angst.
Jumping down some, "Deathride" is slower, but just as intense. This is the song that shows you these guys can be powerful even in a more melodic sense. The intensity is still there and still kicking you in the face. "Monster Hero" is the longest song on the record at 2:52. More angst and punk/metal fusion to keep the party going. Two more quick songs, then the final track, "Iron Lizards" gets us over the finish line.
This gives you 12 full songs in less than a half hour, but don't that let make you think there is not enough on the disc. There is a lot of music on this record in a short amount of time. It's pretty rare to get this much music out of such short songs. As much as a 12-minute epic tune by a progressive metal band can hold your attention and give a great story, these songs gut punch you on the way by and laugh as you try to catch your breath. Step in, sit down, strap in and hold on. This album will take you from 0-60 in three seconds and revel in hitting the wall head on. Enjoy!
