Scent of the Buried
Interment
INTERMENT is a Death Metal band from Sweden, formed in 1990. The band was active until 1994, and then re-grouped in 2002. This is the second full-length release, and contains ten tracks. "Death and Decay" doesn't waste much time railroading the landscape, like a train run amok. The instrumentation is super-low, drop tuned to the Nth degree. Vocally, I would say they are pretty traditional in the Death Metal genre, sometimes shouted and varied in range at times. "Sinister Incantation" has a nearly identical pace and a riff that builds off of the lowest note as a constant, with running guitars and a steady blast beat drum rhythm. There is a change in pace after the first chorus, to a slower, grinding sound that accents the feeling of the macabre. "Chalice of Death" has a different feeling to it, one where the riff starts out in a higher range before circling back to a low key again in the verses. The riff that underlines the vocals in the chorus is pretty spot-on.
"Repugnant Funeral" is a faster song in pace and one where the drums are the constant in moving the track along. The guitars are particularly lively here and the riff changes keep things interesting. The title track, "Scent of the Buried," sets a more foreboding sound from the start, with a slower, more methodical riff and as much punch as can be packed into the main sound. The brutality of the vocals is noted as well, as I imagine this would be a good audible depiction of just what dead would smell like. "Rise of the Dead" goes pretty deep into the well of savageness, with a speedy rhythm and no wasted notes along the way. The guitar solo is a flurry of insane notes and whammy pyrotechnics. "Unholy Upheaval" is also pretty dark in its delivery and the ultra-fast blast beat drums come at you like the bullets from a machine gun, fired in repetition. "Dawn of Blasphemy" breathes a little bit more at the beginning, establishing more of a clear riff and slow, grinding mid-section. The vocals however, have lost none of their potency.
"Skull Crushing Carnage" is just that; a two-and-a-half minute song that features as much energy and furor as possible, not allowing the slightest pause and is utterly relentless. "Nailed to the Grave" rounds out the album. The opening is super-creeping in pace but soon gives way to the butchery that follows. Overall, I would definitely think fans of traditional Death Metal would find this album to their liking. For me, I would have liked to hear a little more variation here and there, which does not have to be mutually exclusive to keeping the tenants of the style with integrity.
