Rocking since 2006 we have Richmond VA metal heads INTER ARMA (which is Latin for "in times of war"). Its hard to pin these guys style down as they take influence from different genre's but metal they most certainly are. With this new release the band are experimenting with a covers album titled Garbers Days Revisited (possibly a play on the METALLICA covers E.P Garage Days Revisited). One thing can be said that this is a wide variety of covers from very different acts so this will be a fun listen.
Starting off is a cover of MINISTRY classic "Scarecrow". Opening with solid drumming and very bass heavy. Guitars coming in with a very experimental kind of approach accompanied by some evil sounding vocals. The Song keeps that solid groove through-out. It is very close and has the same feel as the original version.
Next up is the classic "Southern Man" by the legend that is NEIL YOUNG. This song happens to be a regular staple to live sets by INTER ARMA so it takes a very welcomed spot on the album. Opens with a nice acoustic intro but then we get some evil sounding vocals and almost BLACK SABBATH style music behind it to add that feeling of doom. Some great lead guitar work with that guitar solo and at times we are treated to some crazy drumming. It is quite different to the original but it's a song the band has been playing for a long time have perfected it to make it their own.
Another great song is a NINE INCH NAILS cover of "March of the Pigs" which is such a great song. With some killer drums and bass kicking in the song feels very raw. The vocals here sound great and the song even captures that almost punk vibe and even the feel of the original version as well. Even has that piano stop and start part from the original with a great execution of that classic line "Now doesn't it make you feel better?". Really liked this song.
We are even treated to a cover of the legend that is TOM PETTY with the song "Runnin' Down a Dream". This song right from the start is really rock n roll. The Vocal delivery is excellent here. I would have thought they would have put more of their own spin on this on but it doesn't matter because the song is absolutely killer and they really nailed it with that guitar solo with so much feel to it. I loved this song.
INTER ARMA decided to close the album with style by covering what could possibly be one of the best pop songs ever written and that is "Purple Rain" by the late great PRINCE. PRINCE himself wasn't a fan of people covering his songs but it must be said that the band do some real justice to this one. Opening with that beautiful clean guitar sound and that same ballad feel. The band take their own spin on the vocals as PRINCE's vocal notes can be difficult to replicate. The lead guitar work is great and that delivery with the famous guitar solo is just icing on the cake, amazing job on that guitar solo. This really is a classic song done right and great tribute to the fallen legend.
The songs here are very close to the original while others have their own spin on them in parts but you can really hear that the band are having fun with these songs. This is a wide variety of songs collected here and the vocals show a lot of range on these which is impressive. You may notice in the rates that the song writing may be low but that is mainly because these are cover songs but a good few points are they put their own spin on them nicely. This was a lot of fun to listen too. Nice work lads.
