Back from the Grave, Straight in your Face
Innards
Death Metal in the format laid back during the earlier years of the 90's still has an attractive charm in bands of today. Names as DEATH, MORBID ANGEL, OBITUARY, DISMEMBER. BENEDICTION, MASSACRE and others are still references, because from time to time, bands try to make music on the old ways. And the Portuguese band INNARDS comes storming the ears of the fans with "Back from the Grave, Straight in your Face".
They play the same old and good formula of traditional U.S. Death Metal from the beginning of the 90's (raw sound, aggressiveness inherited from Thrash Metal and Hardcore influences, a massive and brutal form of sound impact) with some Grindcore moments, but with a personal insight. It really reminds works from many ancients, but it's not as bad as some could think. And the presence of Frank Blackfire (guitarist of SODOM) and Kam Lee (the legendary snarling guttural voice of MASSACRE) on "Enlightenment Through Hate" are enough for a serious listening to this release.
The production of this EP was conceived to mix the best of the nasty music from the 90's with a modern aesthetics (to keep the band's music in a level of understanding that can be assimilated for those who aren't into crude sonorities of the past), and it's really good (besides far of being perfect). It sounds aggressive and nasty, but in a way that anyone can understand what's being played.
During "Night of the Anthropophagous" (an Old School Death Metal song on its essence), there's a fine rhythmic work, and very good guitar riffs (and sickening solos). On "Enlightenment Through Hate", a fast and brutal song (but filled with some simple tempo changes), where Kam Lee's snarls and Frank Blackfire's solo gives a boost on the songs. And on "The Fog", the rhythm becomes slow in some moments, besides the Grindcore speed appears in some parts.
INNARDS really shows a good work on "Back from the Grave, Straight in your Face", but they must evolve a bit more their music, because it still lacks a personal outfit. But they have talent, and maybe it's a matter of time to show what they are able to do.
