Iniquitous Savagery - Subversions of the Psyche album cover

INIQUITOUS SAVAGERY is a Brutal Death Metal band based out of Glasgow, Scotland. The band had previously released an EP and a Demo a few years earlier. This is the band's first full-length release and contains eight tracks. "Prey to the Agonies of Morbid Apprehension" is the first song on the album. This is as deep as it goes, as far as the Death Metal genre is concerned. There are ultra-low guttural vocals with absolutely no discernable words, and instrumentation that bears little semblance to music as it is defined. There are some riff changes here and there along with some squeals. "Transient States of Metaphysical Revelation" brings more of the same. The pace is quickened but the overall sound remains in a similar realm. Besides sheer brutality done in as low of a range as possible, it's difficult to find much else to comment on. "Cognitive Dissonance" keeps the album flowing in a linear and traditional manner. Some spoken words in the opening of "Sadistic" set an evil tone for what sounds like something that might come from a torture chamber. What follows is an assault on your senses.

There is a little more get-up-and-go in the title track, "Subversions of the Psyche." If it's even possible, the vocals seem to register even lower than earlier tracks, as if they came from the depths of a black hole in outer space. "Propagating a Pestiferous Enmity" carries forth a similar approach. The riffs cut through you like a chain saw and the vocals rattle in your head like a parasite that is eating your brain alive. The title of the next track is as abstract as some of the chord progressions. "Prognosis of Terminal Parasitic Degradation Facilitating the Process for Utter Decomposition" features some drawn out guttural vocal passages that seem to shake the very air that you breathe. Pig Squeals abound. Closing the album is the song "Subjugated into Pathological Servility." It's a slower, more grinding and deliberate sound as far as the organized chaos. Overall, this album is everything that embodies the tradition of old-school Death Metal, but does not bring anything new to the table. Heavy, dark and deep, there is no denying the musicianship that the band possesses, but it's tough to find more to say with their unilateral sound. However, if you want something to pound your head mercilessly this would fit the bill.<
