There has always been a huge difference in how music sounds within the genre on the European versus the American side of the Atlantic Ocean. But the genre that has the most significant differences surely is the Doom Metal. The Epic and melodic Doom is the European way while Stoner, Desert Rock and so on sets a steady mark in the American soil. INDIAN is very much the American way, guitars tuned down as low there's barely any ring in the notes played anymore. Cool in one way since the music becomes very suggestive and hypnotic. The downside though is without melodies music tend to be pretty flat. I guess it wouldn't be too far off to mention Drone with the INDIAN name.
EARTH in the same genre really impressed me earlier this year but compared to them INDIAN is a little too plain to be interesting throughout the whole album. "Guiltless" is INDIAN's fourth release, I can't say much about the rest of their material since this is my first encounter with the band. I'd say it's not my style of Doom all but on occasions they show off mighty fine passages in the music.
"No Grace" for example, includes an instrumental part with some really cool guitar riffs that sets a completely different feeling in the music. "The Fate Before Fate" almost touches Black Metal with the really atmospheric background to the riffs, the song has the same feeling as the first few BATHORY albums (not sounding exactly as of course) with the open beating of the strings and the brawling vocals. I guess that's what bugs me the most about this album, I really can't stand Dylan O'Toole's Hardcore sounding vocals.
It do work in the last mentioned song but for the rest of the album it's just too static and too much of the same. One more song that sticks out quite a bit, mainly because it's instrumental is "Supplicants", a really beautiful and melodic piece that shows the skills of the musicians. So I guess it's mainly me who don't get this. It's not my cup of tea and I can't really judge if "Guiltless" is a good or a bad album but it didn't do much for me.
