Ex Mortis Gloria
Imperium
No Metal genre can be defined by a specific lyrical approach, even Black Metal (once there are bands that uses the music to express Viking or Pagan themes, or like IMMORTAL, speaks about legends liked to their own fantasy world). Death Metal is not only about Satanism, Death, Gore, or any other lyrical theme one can think of. The limits are created by the bands and fans, so if one wants to blast things out to Hell, this one can do it, as the UK based quartet IMPERIUM does. They prefer a different insight, as can be heard on "Ex Mortis Gloria".
Lyrically, they prefer to write about Roman/Greek mythology, wars and others themes related to these ones to use on their musical work: a form of Technical Death Metal that stays brutal and aggressive, evading the objective use of melodies (just subjective ones due some Thrash Metal like arrangements in many moments). The energy they unleash is amazing, the brutality too, but their music sounds abrasive and personal, in a particular approach that will earn them lots of new fans for sure. Yes, this album is really a very good experience to the ears.
The quartet hired Chuck Creese to work as producer, and he did the mixing and mastering as well. And his efforts created a brutal and oppressive sonority that is usual for Death Metal acts, but always bearing things defined to be understood by the fans. And they brought as guests Dallas Toler-Wade (former member of NILE) to play guitars on "Burning Crucifixions in the Garden of Nero", Daniel Herrera (of UNFATHOMABLE RUINATION) to play some guitars, and Julia Elenoir (of 5RAND) to some sing on some female vocals' parts.
The best words would be 'pick your own set of best songs' for the listeners, once the album is excellent. But for those lazy guys who need a push, "Through Gates of Fire" and "Seven Legions" (both songs are massive assaults of pure Death Metal energy, with excellent vocals that fill the spaces), "Echoes of Slain Kings" (good technical work of the guitars, with excellent riffs and arrangements), "Under Shadows of Giants" (very good set of rhythmic contrasts, what means that bass guitar and drums are showing excellent performances), "Burning Crucifixions in the Garden of Nero" (these guitar parts are really amazing), and "Forged in Treachery" will do the work.
Listen to "Ex Mortis Gloria", and let IMPERIUM teach you a lesson that you won't forget, both lyrically as musically!
