Danish thrashers IMPALERS are the epitome of a no-nonsense band! The "Prepare For War" EP (a follow up to a 2013 full length) is intense and to the point, featuring two new original tracks, and two covers in the form of tracks originally blasted out by SODOM and MOTORHEAD.
Thrash bands seem to frequently suffer from a poor production (whether somewhat intentional or not), but, from the moment that the title track of "Prepare For War" blasts into life, it's obvious that IMPALERS do not suffer from such problems. A driving, relentless, chugging groove kicks in, and acts as the rhythmic bedrock for a whole range of flourishes from the four piece. The lead guitar work of Thomas Carnell is faultless and stands out against the heavy thrash backdrop exactly as you'd want it to, while behind the drum kit, Rasmus Kjær mixes up the vibe, with sections of faster, more frenetic drum patterns mixed into a solid, hard rock base.
The second original track, "Destination: Warfare" ups the tempo, and is perhaps more typical of the thrash genre. It's frantic and energetic, with a guitar part that doesn't stop moving and really pushes the song forwards. The good production, and fine tuned song writing and arrangement, is again present in this relatively short track.
The two covers are enjoyable and fit into the EP with ease, and could easily be mistaken for original tracks. It's great to see a band so comfortable in what they do that they aren't afraid to record cover versions of songs they simply love alongside original work - it's a sign of a lack of pretentiousness, and an eagerness to simply have fun doing what they do!
IMPALERS have done a fine job with "Prepare For War". They've released an EP that is accessible and enjoyable even if you aren't a thrash connoisseur. It's intense, bursting with energy and life, and feels really authentic. What's more, it definitely leaves you wanting more - surely the whole point of an EP!<
