Immolation - Harnessing Ruin album cover

Immolation, for those who are not aware of this name, is one of the first Death Metal bands that emerged from the USA. Their classic debut album, Dawn Of Possession (1991), was released in 1991 but the band already existed since 1986. From the ashes of the cult extreme act Rigor Mortis (hail!), in those first five years Immolation released several demo tapes which got them a strong name in the underground U.S. scene. A set of no-less-than remarkable releases also includes albums such as Hereinafter (1997), Failures For Gods (1999), Close To A World Below (2000) and Unholy Cult (2002).
So, what does Immolation have to offer to us now? Harnessing Ruin is an amazing album! Their basic influence is Morbid Angel, still the band has its own style of Death Metal. This unique sound is a perfect mingle of ultra Heavy riffs that crawl upon the earth plus ultra fast parts that explode right in your face. Their music is really dark and full of feelings: feelings of fury, depression, sadness, madness; the excellent production makes you feel it!
New drummer Steve Shalaty has done a perfect job on the drum parts. Dolan's vocals are perfect, since his voice is very deep and grabs you instantly, but the unbelievable effort comes from the guitars' leads, especially in tunes like Our Savior Sleeps where perfection is combined within inspiration.
The same-titled song has a part after the solo that makes you feel as if you're watching your own funeral. It's amazing! Dead To Me is another special song, featuring a continuous alteration of feelings. Bad memories metamorphosed into anger and complete madness. The end of My Own Enemy, too. Completely dark...
Harnessing Ruin requires a lot of listening from someone who wants to get inside. It's difficult music, technically and emotionally. Still, this album is a recommended release for all Death Metal fans outside! Besides, it's Immolation. You know what lurks insite. On the other hand, if you haven't heard of the band before, this is a good start.
