I Am Trireme - Gnosis: Never Follow The Light album cover

Coming from Philadelphia, I AM THE TRIREME are an upcoming band displaying the almost impossible combination between a Melodic Death metal to a Brutal Black one. As they describe it, "Gnosis: Never Follow The Light" displays a very unique set list. According to their description, each one of the songs has a symbol to it that relates to the metamorphic phases of a butterfly, or to the five stages of grief. It is their first full-length album after 7 years of work, and they seem to be a very promising group.

The sound of the guitars in the beginning of the first song lit in me a great hope of what's to come, unfortunately the drums, instead of supporting the Melodic-almost Power like guitars overcast them with a fast annoying dabble bass. As the vocals entered, the great screams of Joe Briscoe were shown. Their ability to move quickly from screams to something horrifying and deep reminded me of the work done by KING DIAMOND I love so much. In the second song, "Trusty Noose", there's a ghostly choirs that sings a "La La La" verse. All of which and despite the fact that the super fast drums and screaming vocals are not my cup of tea, made me feel like walking into a super-metal-horror-movie and it is a great thing in my opinion.

There's something very disturbing in that combination between the brutal screams and work of the drummer, to the very melodic and hunting plays of the guitarist. That combination gets right into my bones and makes me shiver in inconvenience. The melodies are almost impossible to describe but hunting, and the vocals given here are nothing but amazing.

Unfortunately, even though this album had good chances to be one of the greatest albums I've had the chance to review it didn't get that many points in my book. In many parts of the album, the drums were simply too fast for the music. For times it seemed as if the guitars and the drums were not working together at all, and as if the vocalist trying to connect the two without succeeding. All that being said, I do believe that I AM THE TRIREME is an amazing band with great potential of being one of the strongest names in the extreme metal scene.
