Hughes Turner Project - Hughes Turner Project album cover

Firstly, I'm a big fan of the bands that Joe Lynn Turner and Glenn Hughes have been in.  The first bands I got into were Rainbow and Deep Purple, who were pioneers in melodic rock and inspired a glutton of modern metal bands such as Helloween and Iron Maiden.  But I've never listened to any of their solo material, so I thought I'd give this album a try.

The first song, Devil's Road, steams straight into a fast paced rock rhythm to set the mood for the album.  It's a straight forward song but a good rocker which makes you feel as if you're riding along down the road yourself.  The second song, You Can't Stop Rock'n'Roll is one of my favourites of the album.  It starts with a slower, heavy riff and goes into a great bridge that wouldn't look out of place on Deep Purple's Burn album.  Missed Your Name pushes the tempo back up and really shows off the band with some excellent drum work and a great question/answer section between the guitar and keyboard.  Mystery Of The Heart is a good ballad that slows down the album and gives it some breathing space, at the same time as showing off Glenn's voice, while the next songs, Sister Midnight and Better Man, slip into a more funky groove.  Heaven's Missing An Angel, while having a sappy name is a pleasant, yet heartfelt track which features the talent of John Sykes (Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, Tygers Of Pan Tang) on guitar, the Whitesnake influence from him and Glenn Hughes make this sound like a modern version of Whitesnake's Is This Love.  The tempo picks up for the rockers Ride The Storm and Run Run Run and the album ends with the strong epic On The Ledge, which is a perfect closer to an all round great album and features some really interesting keyboard effects.

Overall, this is a great rock'n'roll album with a group of fantastic musicians, who already have great albums behind them.  It is well produced and has a really good, warm sound.  The basslines are nothing less than I'd expect from Glenn Hughes (ie powerful and compelling, yet melodic) and the keyboard work from Vince DiCola (Transformers, Stan Bush) is diverse and not the usual run-of-the-mill organ so often found on modern rock albums of this genre.  The backing singers are good, but I feel they aren't strong enough in some parts of the music and I don't think the guitarist is anything out of the ordinary, but his solos are melodic and interesting.  The drummer basically keeps the beat and only gets to show off a little.  Finally, Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner's vocals show why they were the voices of rock for so many years in bands such as Rainbow, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and so many more solo albums.  The combination of the two of them singing together also adds an element of variation to keep the listener interested.

When I first got this album I didn't expect much, but it only took me one listen to love it.  It gets through a wide range of styles without losing the listener and is reminiscent of bands that these guys have been in, yet doesn't steal too much so still sounds fresh; a good recipe in my book.  This is a melodic rock album to rival Cornerstone's Human Stain album.  You really can't stop rock'n'roll!
