HORDAK is a metal band from Spain that was formed back in 2002. They consider their music to be "Celtiberian Pagan Metal"; Celtiberian being a blend of Celtic (Irish) and Iberian (which is a group of indigenous people in Spain). The name HORDAK is actually derived from a villain from the classic cartoon, Masters of the Universe. The name apparently inspired the band members with its connection to their childhood and personal beliefs. The album "Padre" was released on January 10, 2016 and showcases their unique sound and blend of genres. If I had to sum it up: it's like Celtic Power Metal with heavy Spanish influences and grinding Death Metal vocals.

The opening track starts off with acoustic strings, which then make an almost seamless transition into electric tones and allowing for the harsh vocals to come roaring in to remind you that this isn't your grandmother's folk music. "Sol Sister" has a pretty cool riff that plays throughout and gets locked in your brain for days. Other tracks include some interesting choices; like spoken words and instruments that are uncommon to the genre.

"A Leader in Times of War" includes an opening speech that sets a tone of resignation to the idea of defensive war. It is more sobering than anything else, but the song itself is pretty good. "Sol" has a bit of xylophone thrown into the mix, which at first seems like an odd choice but it adds a depth to the song and the track wouldn't be the same without.

Likewise, "Father Sun Father Dragon" includes some acoustic guitar that, rather than taking centre stage, plays alongside the electric and the drums to create a haunting but uplifting atmosphere that elevates the song and makes it a stand-out track.

All in all, HORDAK has a distinct feel to them that fits into the stereotypical Viking Metal category that is characteristic of many Norwegian bands; but it is clearly distinct. I wouldn't say it is the same music, but rather that it takes that same fierce pride in its own heritage. HORDAK stands apart thanks to the band members' personal background, which influences their music in a way that can get lost in the mainstream music scene; where everyone wants to copy the newest, hottest thing and it all ends up being derivative.
