Hippie Death Cult - 111 album cover

Formed in 2018 out of Portland, Oregon, HIPPIE DEATH CULT has released their album "111". The band has influences of Doom and Stoner Metal and quite honestly remind me of CLUTCH mixed with THE SWORD. If you are a fan of either of those bands, then I highly recommend this band for you. When I first read the name of the band I was slightly apprehensive about listening to them, but now that I have, I am happy that I was able to hear this album. The band is comprised of Eddie Brnabic on Guitar, Laura Phillips on bass, Ryan Moore on Drums and Ben Jackson on Vocals and Keyboards.

The first song on the album is a track named "Sanctimonious" and it kicks in pretty damn hard right from the beginning. This song has it all, it's dark, bluesy and has a slight jazz feel to it. Honestly this song is absolutely beautifully written and it's a great representation of this style of music. In my opinion it also has some psychedelic rock mixed in there as well. The second song up is "Breeder's Curse" which at the beginning sounds like it was ripped right out of the seventies. I completely fell in love with this song. It's full of energy and it is also really well written. It kind of has a LED ZEPPELIN meets BLACK SABBATH vibe which is amazing.

Up next we have "Unborn" which is the second longest song on the album. It starts off with a really dark and eerie intro which slowly turns into a fun and energetic song. This song will definitely get you in a groove that is almost impossible to ignore. If this song doesn't make you want to sit back and smoke some of the finest green, I don't know what would. "Mrtyu" Is a beautifully written acoustic instrumental that really brightens up the album in a great way. It's thoroughly enjoyable and I am really glad that they added it to the album.

"Pigs" is so far the most upbeat song on the album. This song will really get you in the mood to rock out. It's a really nice addition to the album. It's the type of song that is great to drive around and listen to when you're trying to just have a good time. "Treehugger" is the second to last song on 111 an it brings you right back to the slow yet upbeat style this band is really good at. I could honestly listen to this song all the time and not get worn out on it. The final song on the album is "Black Snake" which sits just over nine minutes long. This is by far one of the best Stoner Rock type songs I have heard in quite a while. Sometimes songs this long seem to be too repetitive, but they managed to keep changing it up and interesting throughout the song. All in all, this album was a really great listen and I will for sure be listening to it for some time to come.
