HELION is a 3-Piece Technical Death Metal band from Mozzo, Italy. After releasing three EPS subsequently, this is their first full-length album. The band was founded back in 2009 by the lead guitarist and vocalist Massmiliano Cirelli.
I highly enjoyed the fact that lean towards Egyptian Mythology and anything Middle-Eastern related. It's a departure from the genre that usually talks about something a bit more morbid but Technical Death Metal bands have a tendency to talk about something fare more serious like Science Fiction or even Space Exploration in some cases. The far more technical side is not only musically, but lyrically as well obviously.
HELION might be the next go to band if you want some very technical yet aggressive music. The album is not only very technical and dynamic but it is also very complex music, so it is more that your usual Death Metal album. It sounds both heavy and progressive and definitely not straightforward like a number of bands in the genre. The lead guitarist does an awesome job and complements the rest of the band admirably. I would say that the best asset of the band is the drummer, he really reminded me of the drummer of NILE (which name escapes me for the time being). He can straight-up do it all even if it's a simpler beat on a song. The guy has some serious chops and I was blown away by his work on this album. I can't wait to listen to the previous three EPs honestly.
If there is one thing on the album that really stands out, then it has to be the production. You obviously have to have great production when dealing with Technical Death Metal. The guitars are crisp, the drum is on point and the vocals match up well. The downside of the album might be the vocals no less. It is your basic Tech Death Vocals and there is no real surprise honestly. It's not something to write home about, it fits well but I wanted something a bit different and it kinda fell flat honestly.
It's not the most cohesive album out there in the world but to an end, it occupies a great place in the genre as for creating complex music. It won't reinvent the wheel in no shape or fashion but if you are into technical, progressive or just aggressive music, you probably shouldn't miss it.
