Hangman's Chair - A Loner album cover

Hailing from Paris, HANGMAN'S CHAIR delivers music that takes elements of several genres, including Sludge, Doom, Metal, Post-Rock/Metal, and then creates magic that touches the soul. The way they blend the sounds of darkness and light is masterfully done, with the music created being both mellow and heavy at the same time.

As I listen to "A Loner" I hear several bands that may have influenced HANGMAN'S CHAIR, chief among them are DEFTONES, SOLSTAFIR, CROWBAR, TYPE O NEGATIVE, and LIFE OF AGONY, all of which are icons of their genres.

"Who Wants to Die Old" is one of the best tracks on "A Loner," with its beautiful intro vocals, which bring to mind Mina Caputo of LIFE OF AGONY. To be honest, there's a lot in this track that sounds like it was inspired by LIFE OF AGONY, think the "Soul Searching Sun" album era. The whole song is wonderful and is my personal favorite.

"Cold and Distant" is another one that immediately drew me in with its perfect intro and great guitar work, and the vocals achieve a quality that is second to none. I feel that the song is another example of how HANGMAN'S CHAR utilizes sound to create an atmospheric magic for the listener, while retaining an edge that flows underneath that.

Other standout songs include "Loner", "An Ode to Breakdown," and "Judge Penitent".

The music on "A Loner" has an ethereal quality, the delicate beauty of the music can be haunting as well as heavy,  and can be light as well as dark. The reasons that I love SOLSTAFIR are the same as why I now love HANGMAN'S CHAIR, and I think that you should investigate the music for yourself.
