Hand of Kalliach

This what I call Melodic Death Metal with a personal touch. Both of the vocalists are excellent, and it’s the interplay between their styles which makes the album so good. He ushers in the demons, and she brings the angels with her. Their fight is one for the ages.

From Bandcamp, “HAND OF KALLIACH” play a blend of melodic death metal with atmospheric Gaelic and Celtic influences, inspired by Scottish folk music. The album here has nine songs, and “Three Seas” is first. Soft, charming female vocals and strings accompany the introduction, segueing into harder sounds from drums and guitar, and harsh male vocals mix in. The main sound is aggressive and contentious.  “Fell Reigns” has a heavier and more deadly sound from the main riff. The vocals are again a combination of deep gutturals from John and tender cleans from Sophia, and you can also hear the Scottish influence in the music. It’s very well done so far.

“Dioghaltas” is even more aggressive with a steady guitar riff and deep, throaty harsh vocals. The key to the contrasting sound so far are that the clean vocals are ushered in with melodies while the harsh vocals contain the fire of Death Metal. “Cirein-croin” has another strong combination of meaty guitars and harsh vocals with the ambient touch of cleans. Just when the song is driving fast towards a cliff, the clean come in and save it from an imminent fall. “The Hubris of Prince Bhreacan” has a deep and cavernous sound, with ominous leanings. There is a melody line running through the darkness that just can’t be doused, and the clean vocals are gorgeous.

“The Cauldron” might be the best song on the album. The balance between light and darkness is very well maintained, and the backing sounds they pour into the song keep it fresh and modern. “Of Twilight and the Pyre” closes the album. It features the beautiful vocals of Sophie, combined with strings and heavy bass guitar. When the harsh vocals roll in, it sounds like bomb exploding. This what I call Melodic Death Metal with a personal touch. Both of the vocalists are excellent, and it’s the interplay between their styles which makes the album so good. He ushers in the demons, and she brings the angels with her. Their fight is one for the ages.
