Gypsy Chief Goliath - Its A Walk In The Mist album cover

Ok where should I start? About the band? Its music style? What? All I can say is: if you are into Stoner and Southern Metal / Rock, you are in for a treat. Got to tell you, never heard of the band but I have heard about some of the band members. This band is a clash of Stoner titans. Ok not titans but human giants. Born from the ashes of their old bands, these musicians helped pave ways in the Canadian Stoner Rock scene. Now I am serious about making no bullshit Rock N' Roll music. The members: Al "The Yeti" Bones (legendary Doom bands: GEORGIAN SKULL, THE MIGHTY NIMBUS, MISTER BONES), John (KEEF), Chris (SALEM SAINTS), Dave (BLOOD RUNS COLD) and Adam (GEORGIAN SKULL) have decided to form a pure Rock N' Roll band that dances on the edge of their Stoner roots as well (taken from their formal biography).

GYPSY CHIEF GOLIATH's sound could only be explained as a mix or fusion if you like between Stoner Rock / Metal and Southern Rock, a mix that many tried to master but only a few succeeded . Can GYPSY CHIEF GOLIATH prevail? The album starts with "Black Samurai" and from the start we can hear the amazing harmonica, I did miss Rock / Metal incorporating harmonica sounds into it, like "Five Horse Johnson", however in seconds the songs go into the Stoner tempo and then one of the best thing in the band is revealed. With the lead vocalist Al "The Yeti" Bones, that's how a real stoner vocals should be, the song is pure Stoner Metal and in a good way.

"The Return" starts with a BLACK SABBATH riff and again Al "The Yeti" Bonesshows the versatility in his voice. The song is a mix of Stoner meets Heavy Metal and just in the right amount. "Cold Hand of Death" reminds me of the CLUTCH's style of riffing and singing but that's only me kind of a CLUTCH fan. Solid song with all the above, "We Are the Devils Thieves" start with a nice banjo riffing that will pop up along the song, GYPSY CHIEF GOLIATH shows a more heavy riffing like KYUSS and SLEEP and yet again the only constant is Bones's vocals, wow!

"Dreaming In Color" shows more Southern meets Stoner like I promised. Stoner riffing with Southern style vocals and harmonica alongside the riffing with a great union, again a solid song, that's probably the fourth time I say solid song. They are doing a good job. Honorable mention to HIGH ON FIRE (wow that a compliment, I think...), GYPSY CHIEF GOLIATH shows that also in a fast Stoner style they can deliver and they do. Don't miss "Saint Covens Tavern" Folk Rock meet Stoner.

Conclusion time guys, I say Fuck yeah! A great Stoner Album and a great addition of contemporary Southern style.
