Although it's common for writers and fans to have labels in hands to describe what bands play, the best is always to try things on you own, and hear what is presented. It's due the fact that no words used to describe something musical can replace the experience of hearing to it. And it becomes even clearer that this idea is true when dealing with "Dawnfall", the first album of the North American quintet GREYLOTUS. The description used to them is that they play a form of Progressive/Technical Deathcore. The experience says that they're using some modern influences on the Progressive/Technical/Melodic Death Metal, because there are moments when it's not a sing to see/hear similarities with releases as "The Gallery" (of DARK TRANQUILLITY) due the excellent melodic and technical approach used by the band, but with some dry aggressiveness inherited from the early works of CHILDREN OF BODOM.

But don't get the wrong idea: these comparisons are done just to give a referential frame, and not to tear off their musical work its real value. It's aggressive, technical, melodic and full of a personal energy, with very good orchestrations living along aggressive parts, guttural grunts contrasting with shrieks and some clean tunes, and the hooks of their songs are hard to resist. The production of "Dawnfall" demanded a lot of the band and the technical crew on the studio, because to find the right balance between clarity, aggressiveness and modernity wasn't something easy, but they did it. It sounds defined and with everything on its due places, but with the right instrumental tunes.

Maybe the band is poised for new musical horizons to be explored in the future, because the ideas show on "Dawnfall" are really very good. But pay attention to the myriad of different rhythms of "Rectilinear Motion" and "Shadow Archetype" (both songs present something extremely technical and filled with many different parts, but always with melodic hooks and excellent guitars), the kaleidoscopic and modern outfit of "Shadow Archetype" and "Currents" (both are full of dynamical rhythmic shifts, so be prepared for a very good work of bass guitar and drums), the modern brutality of "Chiaroscuro", the Melodic/Progressive Death Metal outfit of "Syzygy" (this one shows some Deathcore elements in the middle of the technical chaos), and the harsh and nasty appeal of "Dawnfall", because these are the ones for starting to deal with this album.

This is just the beginning, it's only the band's first album, so be prepared, because the future is promising for GREYLOTUS. But for now, "Dawnfall" is really a great experience.
