Great Cold Emptiness - Immaculate Hearts Will Triumph album cover

From Bandcamp, "This is an album about forgiveness and companionship among friends. An album about understanding the self, and its place in the modern world, as well as the reminder that you are never truly alone. It is an album about the triumph of the heart and overcoming the most difficult stages in a man's life: him finally leaving home." The album has four songs. "The Patron Saint of Whalewatching" is first. The song has some peppy qualities out of the gate, although the production is muted, and the harsh vocals are a deep contrast to the bright notes in the music. It takes an ambient pause just under five minutes in, and the sounds that follow are very beautiful. From there, the music greys a little, signifying man's struggle through the difficult stage. The peppy pace returns, but that struggle continues. I love how this opening song runs the listener through so many different emotions, and the ending minute or so is very pretty, it makes your heart ache.

"To Die for the Ideal" also features harsh vocals butting up against the melody in the music. The two are locked in a battle to the death. For a few moments, hope wins out, as clean vocal harmonies wash over the listener. The guitar work in this song is fantastic...there are more layers than a wedding cake to enjoy. One of the best parts of the album so far is that it always keeps you guessing. Anything can be around the corner. The ending sequence is a veritable crescendo. Rolling forward with haste, "She Sang of Hyperborea" is another battle between light and darkness. Chunky bass guitar notes can be heard carrying some of the gorgeous melodies in the beginning, and the battle seems to take place behind the scenes, so that the listener can't see the struggle. Around the half-way mark, the battle subsides for just a few moments, before both sides take up additional arms for the final push. In the final new minutes, the dark victor seems to be obvious, but never count out the infallible will of the human spirit.

"With Friends like These" closes the album. Those opening tones are so powerful, it's like hurricane winds that blow though the entire landscape, leveling everything in its path. But much like the other tracks, there are survivors. Things settle after the storm, and people begin to rebuild their lives. The only really good and true thing about this is that they all can start from scratch and begin to build a better and more honest life. There are no vocals in this closing song, and the cinematic quality of the music is sweeping, and long reaching. I love the electronic elements that take over towards the end. Their positive and upbeat vibes remind the listener that love will always win, no matter what.

Like the album title suggests, the journey is all about the triumph of the human spirit, and even know we all face dark times, fears, and other doubts, in the end, things will always work out. If that isn't the very definition of what it feels like to be human, and a marked statement on life in general, I don't know what is. The album is so beautiful, at times I feel overrun with emotions, and totally overwhelmed. But the album also gives me strength and fuels my resolve. I will not give up, or give in. Let "Immaculate Hearts Will Triumph" carry you to safety through your darkest days.
