GRAVE DIGGER is one of the best, and oldest, Heavy Metal bands in Germany. It is really hard to be a Heavy Metal fan without hearing about Chris Boltendahl and his amazing band. This band was formed in 1980 and since then they've been working really hard to unleash many great traditional Metal albums. All their albums were great and "Clash Of The Gods" didn't disappoint either. This album continues on displaying what this group has been forging for so long - true Heavy Metal.
This time there won't be any Scottish clans and no new rebellion. No, No... This time GRAVE DIGGER settled again on mythology while choosing the Greek one for this ride. They inspired with a great story about a warrior that traveled around the world. Of course if we are talking about Greek mythology we must pay attention to the gods and even more important, to their monsters. Here there are the glorious of them like Cerberus, Medusa, Sirens, and more. This album took me back to my childhood when I was stealing books from the city library, and one of them was the perfect Greek mythology. I remember myself sitting in my home day after day and reading about all this great myths. So let's begin!
After the intro "Charon" was done for, the song "God Of Terror" and "Helldog" commenced the journey to begin. It is evident that the musicians' composing style is rather unique, especially with the riffs and very powerful solos. On the other hand, these particular songs are nothing special,. These are really good songs and the fans are going to like them, but their older fans (like me) that know this band for many years (I know them 6 years) will find that this is just the same type of songs that keep coming and going under the same format heard for many years, and even with the same rhythms. But don't get me wrong, if you a GRAVE DIGGER fan you are going to love these. It's just... you would not feel that you discovered something new. Close your eyes - "Medusa" is here, one of my favorite songs. This is very good one about the Gorgon monster. Gazing directly upon her would turn onlookers to stone (perhaps all of this because she got snakes on her head instead hair). The song and the lyrics are amazing. Another great song is "Death Angel & The Grave Digger". This song reminds me somehow of MANOWAR. The riffs sound are very the same, but more importantly, the band really love to shout their name in this song. GRAVE DIGGER did the same and it sounds really good.
Then we got "Walls Of Sorrow" that is the album's most aggressive tracks only to accommodate the coming of "Call Of The Sirens", another big time trophy, where we can hear a semi touch of a ballad. The song is about the beautiful Sirens, dangerous and devious creatures, portrayed as femmes fatales who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. The song that ends this album is "Home At Last", the band's single. This is the best song on the album (for me). After the warriors faced gods, Medusa, Sirens and many other dangers, it's time to finally reach their dreams and come back home, where they can reunite with their family. And what about the song?! It's an upbeat, marching and beer-waving song with great sound and great lyrics.
I am really pleased with this work. The band continues to surprise me and they made a very good album that I can call "An instant classic with some minor imperfections". I am really pleased and hope you will all check this album. Oh, and by the way - the album cover is amazing as well.
