The debut album by GOD'S ARMY AD has arrived. I was in an nervous eager state, as the veteran members are truly respected musicians and highly talented people such as drummer Mark Cross (ex METALLIUM/ex HELLOWEEN/ex HARDLINE /ex FIREWIND currently also in activity with reputed Heavy Oriented Rock sensation TAINTED NATION) and multi instrumentist John A.B.C. Smith from GALLOW POLE's fame (ex AT VANCE /ex SCANNER) and a fantastic duo of guitar shredder in the NWOBHM legacy tradition!
I expected this album since the mid 2000's...Massacre Records just published it!
The music is obviously tinted by the legendary 80's steel equally forged from Germany and United Kingdom alike, with hyper intense riffage combined with other typical vintage elements such as omnipresent gang vocal choir and hard hitting drumming. No subtility or grandiloquent arrangments just good old Hard Rock with high octane pace and a gifted lead vocalist in a gruff mode!
Ok , i must admit that the approach is simplistic but damn efficient. The blazing twin axe work, the very talkative Bass guitar, the thunderous beats, the sing along hymns in the great fashion of early MAIDEN / BATTLEZONE and TANK everything is working perfectly but maybe the machine is too well oiled and finally the whole is a little bit pedestrian, repetitive and predictable!
Indeed, this classic method is a little worn out but the recipe is still working well. If you are searching for the new hype, you are reading the wrong review. If on the opposite you are a returning pilgrim in search for some kind of (Headbanging) redemption, or just in a nostalgic mood, this first album looks and sounds like a sacrificial offering burned upon the altar of the Ancient Metal Gods.
