To spam a 10 years musical career is a trial for any band. To support the difficulties of the Metal scene worldwide is something extremely hard, and ask to acts as BLACK SABBATH, MOTÖRHEAD, JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN and other veterans if it's simple to keep the gears rolling on after 10 years playing live shows, rehearsing, writing songs, recording and all the features that exist into the business behind the curtains. So even today, a band that reach ten years of existence is rare, so one must pay some respect to the North American band GODLESS ANGEL. And to celebrate such achievement, it's releasing "Year Ten".

The band is the brainchild of Derek Neibarger, a known musician of Kansas, and it's a one man band. The musical work shown on the EP is a form of traditional Death Metal filled with influences of Groove Metal and Groove Thrash Metal, with a very good technical level and even a melodic touch in some parts (as can be heard on "Thrall of the DejaVoid"). Besides this musical formula is widely known, the personality that pulses on these songs and their energy is something that can't be denied. The production was done in a form that the sound quality inherits some of the usual filth of Groove Metal acts (that one that gives the abrasive and organic feeling of the genre), and it seems that there aren't endless digital editions on the EP. It sounds good and in a defined, with crude instrumental tunes that don't tear apart the understanding of what's being played (but that could be better).

The songs are fine examples that even an eroded musical genre can be shaped in a different form. "Thrall of the DejaVoid" keeps some Groove Metal melodies on the guitars' arrangements (but the sound of a needle touching a vinyl area is annoying, indeed); and even with the groove touches (the reminds some influences of DOWN in some moments), "Whispering Door Mixtape Side One" has a more brutal and aggressive appeal. And "What if I Die in My Sleep" has the same elements of the previous song, with very good rhythmic conductions of bass guitar and drums. And "Deleted Scene" is just an experimental touch that lasts 35 seconds. But the EP brings two remixed version for "Blackened Tongue" and "The Infinite Womb", both presented on the band's first album, "Year One", here with a more abrasive form, but creating a link between the GODLESS ANGEL's past and present.

"Year Ten" is a fine way to celebrate the 10 years of GODLESS ANGEL. So give it a chance, and listen to it on the band's Bandcamp profile:
