I didn't have a clue about those four Norwegians and to tell you the truth, when I read their name, GOAT THE HEAD, I couldn't stop laughing. No really, just tell me the truth, if you didn't know anything about a band with a name like that, what would have your reaction been? Anyway the thing is that after I had inserted the disk into my CD player, I stopped laughing and started headbanging. But let's get things from the start.And the starting point was five years ago, since GOAT THE HEAD was formed in 2005. I couldn't find many things about them except that they have released a mini album called "Neander Tales" and their debut full length album "Simian Supremacy" in 2007. Now three years later and after some lineup changes they are back with their second album "Doppelgängers".

By characterizing themselves as "primal caveman Death Metal gurus" you can understand what they sound like, even if you never came across with their music in their past. I've listened to their debut, too (after I listened to "Doppelgängers") and I have to say this album is the natural next step for the band. Their Death Metal is groovy something that I liked and if you add in the equation that Ketil sounds like Chris Barnes in most of the songs, you have a picture of what to expect. What I like in Ketil vocals is that there are not the typical growls and screams, but you can actually understand the lyrics most of the times and there is a since of melody in his voice, without losing any of the aggression. Their music will make you move your head without understand it, but it lacks of creativity. But you can't wait for anything like that in a death metal album, do you? The female vocals from Kristi Huke in "This Tube is the Gospel" bind nicely with the song's concept and it is the only moment that you will listen to something different.

"Doppelgängers" is a pretty good album. You will definitely have a good time and you will find yourself singing along. Although I don't think it will stay in your CD player for a long period of time, due to the lack of originality. Those guys are not bad at all, but they have to put their own touch in their music. Oh, and by the way, their live shows, dressed as cavemen, are probably something that you don't see every day.
