Goat Semen - Ergo Svm Satana album cover

So it turns out there's a band called GOAT SEMEN. Of course there is. They'd have to exist if only for the sake of giving music reviewers an awkward Google search history to explain to their wives. And with that thoroughly unpleasant moniker, coupled with song titles like "Holocausto" and "Genocido" you can probably guess what genre they fit into.

Hailing all the way from sunny Peru, this unholy four piece play strictly non-commercial anti-music that straddles the line between Black and Death metal. The lo-fi production values and unrelenting extremity might have some appeal to anyone that worships at the altar of MAYHEM, but even for the majority of extreme fans this has little to recommend it.

It's a grubby, nasty little album but with the exception of a few tempo changes, there's nothing to differentiate between the individual tracks. There's the odd SLAYER-inspired guitar solo and a few KING DIAMOND-esque high notes, but for the most part it's just a constant barrage of white noise. It's raw, desolate and they obviously don't have access to the best recording equipment, but it's also painfully uninteresting.

The riffs are monotonous, the drums barely present and the vocals consist of unintelligible screeching. If they were aiming to create a throwback to the blasphemous early days of Black Metal then job done, but it has no character of its own and sounds appalling.

But if you're still intrigued, try catching a few angry hornets in a jar and shaking it for half an hour while shouting unintelligibly over radio static. It'll have much the same effect and is a lot easier to explain than the dodgy websites you'll uncover while researching the band. This is not the grand orchestral malevolence of DIMMU BORGIR and only the most committed corpse paint-clad Vikernes apologists need apply.
