Giant Sleep - Grounded to the Sky album cover

From their EPK, "When GIANT SLEEP came to be in 2012, it was an unlikely but ultimately fruitful liaison: Founded by guitarists Patrick Hagmann and Markus Ruf together with singer Thomas Rosenmerkel, the band became an outlet for the members´ passion for all things classic rock without shallow "vintage" or retro" sentiments. The album has nine songs.

"Silent Field" is the first. The first thing that comes to mind is a retroactive sound from days gone by. The sort of Doomy sound is augmented with vocals that are a bit odd, and some thin riffs. The sound is also sad. The vocals get a little better as the song rolls on, along with some funky bass notes. The title track is another melancholy and longing affair. You can tell how there is a bit of a disconnect from the vocals to the music. The riffs aren't bad, but that disconnect is just enough to notice, and it also keeps the song firmly in the depressive area of music, with a bit of anger every now and then.

"Good Boy" is a swinging and catchy song from an energetic riff and soulful vocals. This is a strong bounce-back from the first two songs, which were underwhelming. The leads are also quite good, following the melody line closely with prolific doses of wah-wah. "Davos" turns back the other way again, with some strong emotions in the vocals, and soft, clean guitars. Again, the melancholy feeling returns. "Shadow Walker" begins with another smooth and retroactive sound of gloomy elements. The vocals are expressive and might be the best part of the song. The lamenting carries on just a bit too long at the end. "Cemetery Story" draws some comparisons with BLACK SABBATH. The depressing elements are drawn out until they grab your throat and choke you.

"The Elixir" closes the album; an eight-minute beast. Many of the sound that were common in the other tracks are also present here. They drive the depressive elements home until there is nothing left of you. Despite the band's confidence, it's hard to describe a sound like this without mentioning "vintage" or "retro" statements, because this sound has been done before, many times. I am not questioning the band's musicianship, or their ability to write some catchy songs, but the notion that this isn't an Old School sound is just, well, wrong. Although they put their own personality into the songs, they are still sounds that you have heard before, and without a lot of additions.
