The Erotics Of Disgust
Ghost Horizon
GHOST HORIZON is an Atmospheric/Post-Black Metal band based out of Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Formed in 2015, the band had previously released an EP entitled "Astral Possession," to some critical acclaim. "The Erotics Of Disgust" is their second EP, and contains four tracks, with a running time of just over 17 minutes.
"Radiant Eyes" opens with a positive, shiny sound, about as far from the depths of this genre as you might expect. That is the more Post Black/Atmospheric Black side of the genre. When the vocals and drums join the fold, they are unapologetically hard and snarly, with an edge that cuts you open like a sharp blade. There are some real soul-bearing elements here as well. "So Hollow" has some great ambiance, with the whispered clean vocals and the ensuing echoes that envelope you, like warm spring air as you wander down your favorite wooden path at the basin of spired mountain peaks. The Death vocals are looming in the background, with just enough presence to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, warning you that things might not be as innocuous as they seem.
"This Forever Flow" also shines with bright lights at times, almost fooling you into thinking that this benevolent sound will be all the track brings. But the Death vocals and double/quad bass rolls usher in a brutality that is hard to overlook. Anguished screams remind you that people can be fine on the outside while suffering within. "Whispers" is the closing song on the EP. A solitary man yells orders that are answered by heavy, brutal Black Metal leanings, like you are witnessing the trails of a doomed soul by the guardian of the underworld, ending the EP with absolute anguish.
What is sometimes wonderful about this genre of music is the touches of the composer's personality and feeling reflected in the music. Here on "The Erotics of Disgust", they are inseparable, creating for the listener a glimpse into the inner being, with all the fears, doubts and loathing that we all feel from time to time but are so good at suppressing. This is the very definition of what good music should do for you. There are some traditional elements here of the Black Metal days of old, which is great, but it's so much more than what can be defined by that sound. It's like Black Metal was brought out of the burned out churches and lightless places in the far reaches of the Earth, and given new life.
