G.R.I.M. "is what happens when to souls share the same thought, at the same time, without knowing that the other person has had that thought it, and then suddenly mentions it to each other. G.R.I.M is a creative outlet for all the dark and gloomy stuff that was hidden in the drawer, labeled "doesn't fit in," as in "doesn't fit the profile of our current bands." Gimse once told Dan Are at a party: "I have some really dark lyrics." It only took a couple of months before his e-mail was filled with heavy, gloomy and melancholic riffs. So, Gimse and Dan Are summoned their bandmates and suddenly, the doom and gloom of G.R.I.M. was ready for the public." "Descensus ad Inferos - Shades of Sheol" contains four lengthy tracks.

"Diary of a Misanthroposophist" opens the album, with a fuzzy and lumbering riff that reaches far into the depths, where it is and will always be black. The vocals are bordering on harsh utterances, and the entire song is desolate. It's like a slow torture. A guitar solo towards the end puts the nails into your coffin. "The Decline of Society" opens with a harrowing riff and the sound of knowing that something is over your shoulder, lurking in the dark. The riff moves around a little but that punishing sound does not let up. It gets darker as it moves along and the vocals turn nefarious. That light little acoustical passage does brighten things up for bit but it doesn't last long.

"The Age of Misology" opens with acoustical guitars, leading pretty quickly to a massive and Doomy riff. Just before the half-way mark, the sound drops to just bass guitar along with some feedback, but the main sound soon returns. A guitar solo ensues, as the song begins to get more depressing, and that's how it ends. "Push the Button" closes the album. It opens with soft acoustical guitars and a depressing sound. A massive riff develops, with harsh vocals. A brief clean guitar passage breaks up the madness for just a spell. Gimse puts everything he has inside him into this vocal performance. It is a gut wrenching cry of despair/anger. The chaos builds and then there is a long fadeout to nothingness.

Overall, I liked the album. I found their use of despondence and depression to be really strong. The riffs are heavy and gloomy indeed. Doom Metal can get too boring at times but these guys know how to shake things up a bit, with other elements sprinkled in. That last track, was Death in disguise. Give this album a go if you are a Doom Metal fan and looking for something off the beaten path.
