Funeral Winds
This album is dedicated to He, whose name is three hundred and thirty three, and that thrice one. “333” is the title of Funeral Winds 8th studio album and refers to the Dweller in the Abyss, the Demon of Dispersion, also known as Choronzon. Seen as the last great obstacle between the adept and enlightenment, Choronzon needs to be faced to be able to move beyond the Abyss. Stylistically, this album is raw and cold Black Metal that throws the grit right in your face. FUNERAL WINDS stays true to the original values of Black Metal, hateful and relentlessly contemptuous in sound and vision.
“Sovereign of Shadows” is the first song. Out of the gates, the production and sound is about what one might expect of FWOBM inspired Black Metal…overly treble production, wicked harsh vocals, and ever-present drums. “Eternal Nightmare” is a little darker, but has a similar sound. The band seems intent to stay absolutely true to their Black Metal roots. There is some variation in the riffing, but so far, it is pedal to the metal, literally. “Cast the Gauntlet of Doom” has a slower pace, with some Doom elements mixed into the riffs at first, but it descends into madness later. “Ancient Wrath Unleashed” again has some slight variations in the riffs, and a more linear sound at times. When the band settles down a bit, you can hear what they are offering more clearly.
“The Damned Ones Shall Rise” has a very harrowing sound, and the band is starting to hit their stride on the album. You can even hear some of the bass notes, but overall, it is lost in the mix. “Forever Cursed and Bound” has a slower grind at first, along with some amateur qualities in the music which come through. “Birthed by Pure Malevolence” is quicker but the vocals get a little lost. The guitar and drums are so loud, they outblast nearly every other element on the album. The lengthy “Conjuration of the Blind One” closes the album. A lyric is repeated for a bit in the beginning, and then the band is off and running. Overall, this is first wave inspired, maddening Black Metal with the gas pedal pressed firmly to the floor.
